The Symphonic Orchestra Giuseppe Verdi of Milan, founded in 1993 by Vladimir Delman, has become one of the most important Symphonic Orchestras in Italy. Actually, the Orchestra is highly flexible and versatile, performing a repertoire which ranges from Bach to the main composers of the nineteenth-century Symphonic music and offering new programs that unite classic and unusual music.
The program of the Season includes every year more than 30 different symphonic concerts, as well as some smaller concert series, as for example “Music & Cinema” and “Crescendo in Musica”, an important activity that is dedicated to a younger public.

Riccardo Chailly, Musical Director from 1999 to 2005, has been nomined Conductor Laureate on September 2005 while Claus Peter Flor, Lü Jia and Helmut Rilling are its Principal Guest Conductors.
Rudolf Barshai, who has been very close to the Orchestra for many years, is Conductor Emeritus from the season 2006-2007, whereas the famous horn player Radovan Vlatkovic has been nomined artist in residence.
The Orchestra inaugurated the Auditorium of Milan, new concert hall of the city and new musical house of the Orchestra, on October 1999, performing Mahler's Symphony No. 2 Resurrection, conducted by Riccardo Chailly. With excellent aesthetic, technological and acoustic characteristics, the Auditorium is among the best concert halls in Italy.

The Symphonic Chorus Giuseppe Verdi of Milan was born on 1998; it's a special prerogative of the Orchestra, and has been conducted by Romano Gandolfi untils his sudden death on February 2006. The Chorus is actually made of 100 singers that performe a vast lyric-symphonic repertoire form baroque to the Twentieth Century.
The Orchestra has been conducted also by Riccardo Chailly, Georges Prêtre, Riccardo Muti, Valery Gergiev, Rudolf Barshai, Claus Peter Flor, Christopher Hogwood, Yakov Kreizberg, Peter Maag, Kazushi Ono, Eiji Oue, Daniele Gatti, Vladimir Jurowski, Helmut Rilling, Marko Letonja, Ivor Bolton and Roberto Abbado, Herbert Blomstedt, Krzysztof Penderecki, while the important debuts of Leonard Slatkin, Vladimir Fedoseyev and Wayne Marshall are planned for the upcoming Season. The Orchestra has played with soloists such as Martha Argerich, Mstislav Rostropovic, Vadim Repin, Hilary Hahn, Lynn Harrell, Viktoria Mullova, Sarah Chang, Midori, Han-Na Chang, Jean-Yves Thibaudet, Nelson Freire, Salvatore Accardo, Mario Brunello, Alexander Toradze, Radovan Vlatkovic.
On 2000 the Orchestra, conducted by Ion Marin, had a tour in Japan with the Piccolo Teatro di Milano for a new production of Così fan tutte: that was Giorgio Strehler's opera as Director. On 2002, the Orchestra has been Orchestra in Residence at the Spoleto Festival.
On October 2002 Riccardo Chailly led the first European tour of the Orchestra and on June 2003 the Orchestra, conducted by Oleg Caetani, visited Brazil, Chile and Argentina.
On October 2003 the Orchestra and the Chorus, conducted by Riccardo Chailly, played into the major concert halls of Japan, while on January 2004 the Orchestra, under the conduction of Riccardo Chailly, had its debut at the Festival de Musica de Canarias.
During the Summer 2004 the Orchestra was called Orchestra in Residence at the Festival delle Nazioni at Città di Castello. On January 2005 the conductor Eiji Oue led the Orchestra in a tour to Germany and France. On May 2005 the Orchestra and Chorus, conducted by Riccardo Chailly, performed in some of the most important European cities such as Zagreb, Ljubljana, Athens, Frankfurt, Vienna and Budapest, and after, at the end of May, had its debut at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino.

For the upcoming Season the Orchestra has announced two important tours: the first one, on November 2006, leads the Orchestra,under the conduction of Marko Letonja and with the participation of the great Italian pianist Benedetto Lupo, on an important national tour to the most famous Italian cities, while in June 2007 the Orchestra, conducted by Michael Schønwandt, has been invited to the greatest theatres in South America.
On 2002 the Symphonic Orchestra and Symphonic Chorus Giuseppe Verdi of Milan Foundation had been founded with the support of Banca Popolare di Milano, RAS, the Region of Lombardia, the City of Milan, the Chamber of Commerce of Milan, the Province of Milan and Pirelli RE, to guarantee the tradition which has been characterizing the Orchestra since its foundation on 1993: there's an important presence of a multitude of members who support the Orchestra and confer that special identity on our musical institution.
The Orchestra has started a collaboration with Decca. Its first recording, Verdi Heroines, has won the Gramophone Award, the Classic FM People's Choice and the Choc de l'Année. The following recording, Verdi - Messa Solenne, with the participation of the Chorus and conducted by Romano Gandolfi, had a nominee for the 2001 Gramophone Awards. On 2002 the Orchestra recorded Rossini Arias, a recital with Juan Diego Flórez, Sacred Songs with Placido Domingo, Rossini Discoveries, conducted by Riccardo Chailly and a second recital by Flórez, Una furtiva lagrima. The latest recordings include a CD of Sacred Songs with Placido Domingo for Deutsche Grammophone, two further CDs with rarities of Italian composers, Verdi Discoveries with the participation of Jean-Yves Thibaudet and Puccini Discoveries, directed by Riccardo Chailly; on April 2005 a CD with orchestral transcriptions by Luciano Berio, conducted by Riccardo Chailly, was published by Decca; on Autumn 2006 the Complete Symphonies by Shostakovich, conducted by Oleg Caetani, will be published by Arts, and, for the label Brilliant Classics, the Shostakovich Chamber Symphonies, conducted by Rudolf Barshai.
